Flying Into and Out of Daytona Beach

Lynn asked me write this article because I've been flying to consulting assignments around the country since 1997. I've been going back and forth to Puerto Rico for the last 20 months.

For the first few years, I flew out of Daytona Beach almost exclusively. Most of the time I flew Delta to Atlanta and then on to New York, LA, Columbus, OH, Cincinnatti, San Francisco, and on and on. After too many times missing flights, being delayed and checking into hotels after 3:00 AM, I changed course and began flying out of Orlando.

I fly out of Orlando because I can get a direct flight to just about anywhere and the cost is often hundreds, often $200-$300, less for a round-trip ticket. I fly JetBlue whenever I can because they get me there on time about 90% of the time. Generally, I get to where I'm going much faster when going out of Orlando. I would love to support the local Daytona Beach International Airport, but service is too limited and I value my time too much.

There are several ways to get to Orlando and back:

• Rent a car - I've often rented a car, kept it for the weekend and returned it back in Orlando. I've also rented one way. Prices vary depending on the time of the year.
• Drive and park - this can be expensive if you use covered parking at the airport at $17 a day. Off airport parking is as low as $8.00, but you need to add time to the trip to take the shuttle back and forth.
• Take the Shuttle - I started taking the DOShuttle (Daytona-Orlando Shuttle) a while back. The rates are $30.00 one-way and $55.00 round-trip, kids 2-12 are $15/$25. It's a nice comfortable trip and you are dropped off at your airline. They are located on Beville road. Check out their website at www.doshuttle.com.

Regardless of where you fly out of, here's a few tips that work anywhere:

• Don't take the last flight of the day or night. If that flight is cancelled, you're stuck.
• If the weather forecast is for a big snow storm and you're flying out, book a hotel room. If the storm comes and flights are cancelled, you have a room. If not, cancel before the cancellation time and it won't cost you anything. Not likely to happen in Daytona Beach, but it could happen on the way back. I spent a nice comfortable night in the Kennedy Airport Hilton in New York when others were sleeping on cots in the ballroom.
• Drink lots of water and stay hydrated on long flights. You will feel better during and after the flight.
• Make sure you have some food in your bag. Too many times I've been delayed on the runway or in the air. If I didn't have a bag of trail mix or nuts, I would have been really hungry by the time I landed.
